(What is unusual about this is that I remember vividly starting at the end of winter/beginning of spring 1979. All of these songs I remember from that time. I have strong musical recall, and I remember snapshots of my life from before this, but I can tell you what I felt, what I smelt, etc. These songs trigger all of that. This is why I love pop music.)
10. Little River Band- Lady
Cheesy, wimpy, bouncy soft rock at its finest. Even at its finest, its not all that great. I admit though, the chorus is great. Someone should remake this and really rock it out. B
9. Blondie- Heart of Glass
New York punk rockers go disco, and hit it big in mainstream America. Debbie Harry became a rock and roll heartthrob for boys and men alike. Her attitude was more real than any of the prepackaged phony sex appeal that we've grown too used to. She was fucking great. Girls loved her, too. This was a brilliant, successful crossover tune from the essential album, Parallel Lines. A-
8. Rod Stewart- Da Ya Think I'm Sexy? Speaking of disco crossover songs...Ol' Semen Belly got in on the act. This one holds some novelty value, but really, it's pretty shite. C-
7. Amii Stewart- Knock On Wood
In my opinion, THIS is the best disco song of all time. I got my driver's license in 1992. I got a Disco Comp tape to listen to in my '88 Toyota Corolla, and this song sounded PERFECT in it. I was a very special teenager. The sound effects in particular were vivid in my brown Japanese ride. A+
6. Frank Mills- Music Box Dancer
I remember hearing this one all the time while my mother drove me around the Arnold/Severna Park area. A pleasant instrumental. B
5. Peaches & Herb- Shake Your Groove Thing
Apparently, Herb hires a Peaches, fires them when they hit 30, and replaces them with a new Peaches. In other words, he's the musical version of Donald Trump. This is alright. B
4. Dire Straits- Sultans of Swing I like this song a lot more than I thought I did before I just listened to it. Knopfler is a great guitarist, fo sho. This is a great song as well. A nice groove here. B+
3. Bee Gees- Tragedy
To follow up on their success with Saturday Night Fever, the Brothers Gibb came back with this tune which mixes the rock elements of their 60s tunes with the falsetto greatness of their disco stuff. It's not up to the standards set with the SNF Soundtrack, but is not bad. B
2. The Doobie Brothers- What a Fool Believes
I fucking hate this song with a violent raging passion. From the bouncy stupid beginning to Michael McDonald and his shitmouth vocals, UGGHHHHHH I HATE THIS SONG! Fuck Michael McDonald in his ear with a rusty spike. (I clearly associate this song with something bad that happened to me in 1979. I spent a week in an oxygen tent at Anne Arundel Hospital early in the year, and was nearly a goner. I think that's where this anger comes from.) F
1. Gloria Gaynor- I Will Survive
THIS is the second greatest disco song of all time. Unbelievably powerful stuff. Ms. Gaynor's vocals carry the intensity. A+
