BILLBOARD TOP TEN- APRIL 8, 1972

(I was -3 years, 20 days old at this point. Excuse me if my memory is a little fuzzy.)

10. Robert John- The Lion Sleeps Tonight

A bubblegum pop version. This spent 3 weeks at #3 in March. Cutesy. B-

9. Dramatics- In The Rain

A ssllllowwww jam, complete with weather sound effects, strings, etc. Decent. B

8.The Chakachas- Jungle Fever

This is basically an instrumental which stops every so often so we can hear a woman in the throes of ecstasy. Pretty damn raunchy/great. B+

7. Paul Simon- Mother and Child Reunion
A wonderful reggae tune from Mr. Simon. I didn't learn to appreciate Paul Simon until recently. I used to HATE his music. The guy is a hell of a songwriter, and did more to turn yuppies and preppies on to wonderful forms of music from around the world than anyone else. That's a great legacy, in my opinion. A

6. Donny Osmond- Puppy Love

When we were very little children, my cousin Athena and I used to play a game that involved throwing her Donny Osmond doll up onto the canopy over a bed at our grandparents' house. I'm not sure what the rules were, but sometimes Donny would bounce off and crash to the floor, and sometimes he'd stay up in the canopy. No matter what happened, we laughed hysterically. That personal anecdote was 50 times more interesting than anything related to Donny Osmond, with the exception of Marie. This song is horseshit. F

5. Michael Jackson- Rockin' Robin

Awesome voice. This kid could have a future in the music business. As long as he lays off the children, the Jesus complex, the plastic surgery, the skin color changing, and the drugs, he'll be A-OK. This is from the era where he sang about rats and birds. Nice cover of Bobby Day's rock classic. A-

4. Joe Tex- I Gotcha

HOLY SHIT THIS SONG IS INSANE/HILARIOUS/GROOVY. B+

3. Roberta Flack- The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

I like her voice. She sounds sort of like a less quirky Nina Simone. I like the earmuff afro look, too. This song could easily have been way too sappy if anyone else sang it. She makes it an emotional success. (Next week, it hits #1, and stays there for 6 weeks.) A-

2. Neil Young- Heart of Gold

This song remains at #2 for the third straight week after hitting the top. Neil's only American #1. Hey, that's one more than Springsteen. He was the best singer/songwriter in the world at this point. A-

1. America- A Horse With No Name

The only thing more offensive than this blatant Neil Young imitation/ripoff hitting #1 is that it KNOCKED NEIL YOUNG OUT OF THE TOP SPOT, AND FORCED HIM TO STAY AT #2 FOR 3 WEEKS WHILE IT SHIT ON HIS CANADIAN HEAD. Ignoring that, it's a great folky song about heroin. B+
